Publishing a children's book requires time

Not only does the process from writing to hitting shelves take awhile (nine to 12 months seems like a fair amount of time if you keep momentum up), but pursuing publication requires a lot of the writer's time.

It's completely possible, even if you don't know the first thing about publishing. Just take it one step at a time! This post is for those who have fully completed their book.

Children’s authors can expect an advance of between $5,000 and $10,000 on their first book, with subsequent royalties of around 7% for printed books and up to 25% on ebook sales. Picture book royalties are split between the writer and the illustrator — and often in the illustrator’s favor.

Book Doctors: So, everyone wants to know, do you need an agent to get a children's book published? Jennifer: Ten years ago or more, the answer would have been no. These days, trade publishing is ever-more competitive and none of the major publishers accept unsolicited (i.e., un-agented) submissions.

Children’s books don’t come cheap. Between quality illustrations, color printing (which is more expensive than black and white), and the number of books you may have to print ahead of time, publishing a children’s book could easily cost you $10,000.

Although some forms of self-publishing are cheap, successfully self- publishing a children's book isn't. This is because to reach your audience, you're almost invariably going to have to publish actual paper books – most kids don't rely on e-readers for their daily dose of Richard Scary and Roald Dahl.

You can self-publish children’s books via Amazon for free, yes, but their picture book paper quality is not good, and you make marginal profit. Offset printing is superior in quality of paper and profit per book sold, but it’s costly up front which is why there will never be a better option than traditional publishing (if your book is deemed good enough!).

Enter the required title information (your book title, author name etc.) and use our Age and Grade tools to help readers find your book in Kindle Stores worldwide. You can use KDP's Cover Creator tool to create a book cover or upload your own. Select the territories you have the rights to sell your title in and click publish.

Most of the time, children's books publishers prefer to deal with literary agents. You could query an agent with your new book ideas and see if there's any interest. The fact that you've written and self-published a book already won't hurt your chances!
