Ashtanga Yoga is the same as traditional Indian yoga practice that involves physical postures, breathwork and meditation. The term Ashtanga means eight-limbed. (Ashta means eight + anga means limb). The eight limbs are disciplines that a yogi must follow to achieve self-realization.

The traditional method also asks you to practice six days a week, which is an often daunting task. There are then lifestyle and diet changes that are recommended for more committed Ashtangis, including following a plant-based diet and practicing early in the morning. Ashtanga Yoga isn’t for everyone. And yet, perhaps it is.

Don’t expect to practice the full 90 minutes of Ashtanga yoga with no mistakes on your first go. Start small, and build on your practice every day. This way, you’re less likely to feel overwhelmed by all of the poses or disappointed when you don’t make it through the full sequence.

One way to practice with a teacher is to go on an Ashtanga yoga retreat. These are a wonderful opportunity to practice with experienced teachers and develop your practice. And also as an added bonus, you will get to meet lovely people from all over the world. Ashtanga yoga retreats may last from just a weekend to a week to a month!
