As of 2016, only 5,648 children were placed via international (also known as intercountry) adoption. For 2017, international adoption rates dropped to 4,714.

A staggering statistic regarding child adoption around the world is that somewhere around 1.5 million children that are living in Central and Eastern Europe live in out-of-home care, such as orphanages and foster care.

International adoptions also account for a significant, albeit lower, portion in the adoption statistics. According to “the U.S. Department of State and the Bureau of Consular Affairs, approximately 20,000 children have been adopted annually from other countries over the past 10 years.”.
